President Donald Trump said in a social media post on Friday that an 80% tariff on Chinese products “seems correct” before key commercial conversations this weekend.
“80% of the Chinese rate seems correct! With Scott B,” Trump said in a social publication of truth. The Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Besent, is one of the US officials who spoke with homologists from China at a meeting in Switzerland.
An 80% tax would be a strong reduction in the 145% rate that currently faces many Chinese products.
China is seen as the key obstacle in Trump’s effort to shake the world commercial environment. While many other important countries saw the previously announced partial announcements stopped on April 9, tensions between the White House and Beijing until both countries had imposed a rate of more than 100% on goods.
