The Roman Catholic cardinals selected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the new Pope on Thursday, the first time an American has been selected as a pontiff.

Prevost, 69, chose the name Papal Leo XIV.

A native of Chicago, Prevost was chosen on the second day of the Cardinals’ conclave.

Prevost was announced more than an hour after the cardinals pointed out their choice with white smoke columns that undertake a chimney in the Sistine Chapel in the city of the Vatican.

The previous pontiff, Pope Francis, died on April 22 at age 88.
