Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the company will have robotaxis in the streets of Austin, Texas, at the end of June.
In an interview with CNBdoDavid Faber on Tuesday at the company’s headquarters in Austin, Musk said that Tesla aims to bring his robotaxis to Los Angeles and San Francisco after Austin’s planned debut.
Musk said the Robotaxi service will begin with about 10 vehicles in Austin, and will quickly expand thousands of vehicles if the launch goes well without incident.
Since 2016, Musk has promised investors, clients and fans of Tesla that the company is about a year to deliver an autonomous car that is capable of leading passengers safely without human interventions, or a human in the steering wheel.
To begin with, Tesla has said that its robotaxis will be model vehicles and equipped with an upcoming version or FSD (self -ddriving) known as FSD without supervision.
Alphabet Waymo is currently operating commercial services and transport dristers in several US markets. In a recent earning call, Alphabet said Waymo already makes 250,000 trips paid per week.
Musk said that Tesla “Geofence” his robotaxis in Austin to begin with, which means that the company will limit where these model vehicles can drive. But he won a human security driver in the cars, Musk promised.
Tesla employees will remotely monitor the fleet, he said.
“We are going to see what cars are doing very carefully and confidence grows, you will need less,” Musk said.
