President Donald Trump said on Monday that China “agreed to open” after the two countries announced that the majority of tariffs on the goods of the other would temporarily reduce.
Trump offered few details about the development, but said that “perhaps it was the most important” to get out of high -level commercial conversations between the two superpowers in Geneva, Switzerland, during the weekend.
Trump indicated that these supposed commitments have not yet been cemented.
“We have to deposit it,” he said at the White House before signing an executive order on the prices of US medications. “But they have agreed to open China.”
Trump’s comments occurred hours after US and Chinese officials said they reached an agreement to stop most tariffs and other commercial barriers for 90 days.
The United States agreed to temporarily reduce tariffs on China to 30%, below 145%. Beijing said he will reduce tariffs on US 10% goods from 125%.
Trump said Monday morning that China tariffs would not return to 145%, even if Canot’s long -term treatment is reached, the 90 -day break expires.
“But they would rise to substances,” Trump added.
The American side of the temporary agreement reduces Trump’s “reciprocal” rates on 10%China. The United States also maintains tariffs of 20% that were previously imposed on accusations about China’s role in bringing fentanyl to the United States.
The United States said it will also retain tariffs that were in place for specific Chinese products, including steel and aluminum, before early April.
China will also “suspend or eliminate non -tariff countermeasures” that has imposed on the United States from April 2, according to the White House.
The duties that Trump slapped China in April effectively established a commercial embargo with one of the largest suppliers of assets in the United States.
The agreement to temporarily suspend tariffs will begin on Wednesday.
The Chinese embassy in the United States did not respond immediately to the request for CNBC comments on Trump’s comments.
