The pubs can remain open until 01:00 BST if England or Wales reach the final stages of the UEFA Women’s European Championship, said the Ministry of Interior.
The usual closing time of 23:00 will be delayed if any hometown reaches the semifinals or the tournament final, scheduled for July 2-27 in Switzerland, to mark an event of “exceptional national importance.”
England is defending the champions, while Wales has been classified for the first time. Both teams have a leg drawn in the same group.
“Nothing brings together people how to see our national football teams,” said Police Minister Diana Johnson. “We want fans to enjoy every minute of thesis matches.”
The two semifinals will take place on July 22 and 23. The final will take place in Basel on July 27.
Wales will be the first side of the hometown to play when they face the Netherlands on July 5. The lions will play against France the same day.
The Pub opening schedule also extended to the 80th anniversary of victory on Europe day this month, as well as for the semifinal and the final of the male euros last year.
The decision is “a positive and progressive movement that recognizes the growing popularity of women’s football and its cultural importance throughout the United Kingdom,” said Michael Kill, executive director of the Association of Night Indies.
The executive director of British Beer and Pub Association, Emma McClarkin, said: “The pub is home to live sport.”
“Our sector plays an important role in promoting the community spirit and extending the hours of license that people can meet for longer and organize more events that encourage our squads,” he added.
