Pochettino: Matt Turner not assured starting GK spot at CONCACAF Gold Cup

Matt Turner is not sure of removing the headline of the United States for the Concacaf Gold Cup after not being able to play for Crystal Palace during the last two months.

Turner has begun 14 consecutive competitive games for the US and 24 or 24 that date from the 2022 World Cup, the only exception of a group phase game of the Gold Cup against St. Kitts and Nevis in 2023.

“Or the course, until now Matt was our number one option, but that can change,” said American coach Mauricio Pochettino, on Tuesday a zoom press conference. “In our mind, it is open for another player to challenge.”

Turner is among the six goalkeepers in the preliminary list of 60 men, together with Zack Steffen, Matt Freese, Patrick Schulte, Diego Kochen and Chris Brady. Pochettino intends to choose four for his training camp before games against Türkiye and Switzerland that precede the tournament.

Turner, who turns 31 next month, has played only four games for Crystal Place this season, one in the League Cup and three in the FA Cup. Dean Henderson was in the goal when Palace beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final last weekend for his first important trophy.

Turner’s last game was on March 23, the 2-1 defeat of the Americans against Canada in the third game of the Concacaf Nations League. His last club was on March 1.

Since the New England of Major League Soccer for Arsenal in the summer of 2022, Turner has played only 31 club games in three seasons for the Gunners, Nottingham Forest and Palace. Giving an initial club work is essential for Turner to be the head of the United States in the World Cup next year.

“We were talking to him,” said Pochettino. “In a year, I think you need to find a way to compete every week.”

The United States plays Turkey on June 7 in East Hartford, Connecticut, and Switzerland three days later in Nashville, Tennessee, then meets Trinidad and Tobago, Saudi Arabia and Haiti in the first round of the Gold Cup.
