More Women Doctors Than Men in the UK A First in History

For the first time ever, women now outnumber men in UK medicine. Yep, it finally happened. Official figures show 164,440 women doctors are licensed to practise. Men? 164,195. A small gap. But a huge shift.

From One Woman to Thousands

Go back. Way back. To 1858. The very first medical register. Just one woman. Elizabeth Blackwell. An outsider. An American. She forced her way into a profession that didn’t want her. The rest? Men in white coats.Fast forward nearly 170 years. Hospitals, GP surgeries, emergency wards. Look around. Chances are, your doctor might be a woman. The thing once seen as “impossible”? Now a quiet reality.

Why It Matters

This isn’t just about numbers on a chart. It’s aboutculture. It’s about trust. It’s about how patients feel when they sit across from their doctor.

Studies keep saying the same thing patients often rate women doctors higher for empathy, listening, explaining. But don’t think the battle’s done. Some parts of medicine are still old boys’ clubs. Surgery. Emergency medicine. Long hours. Hard culture. Less room for flexibility. And women often get pushed out or simply don’t make it through.

The Numbers, Up Close

Take a look. The divide is clear:

Obstetrics & Gynaecology – around 63% women

Paediatrics – roughly 61% women

General Practice – 58% women

Surgery – only 17% women

Ophthalmology – about 35% women

Emergency Medicine – 37% women

So yes, women are now the majority overall. But in some corners? Still the minority.

Voices from the Frontline

Not everyone is cheering without caution.

Professor Dame Carrie MacEwen from the GMC called it a “significant milestone.” She added, support matters for every doctor, no matter gender or ethnicity.

Dr Latifa Patel from the BMA was blunter. “If we want to keep women in medicine, we need childcare, flexibility, and fair systems.”

And Professor Scarlett McNally from the Medical Women’s Federation said it’s not just about getting women through the door. It’s about letting them climb. Leadership. Decision-making. Breaking ceilings, not just entering the room.

So, What Now?

This moment matters. Big time. A profession that once shut women out now has more women than men. A circle closed. A barrier smashed.

But here’s the truth it’s a milestone, not the finish line. Equality in numbers is good. Equality in opportunity? That’s the real endgame.

Until then, we celebrate the step. And we keep walking.
