Mahila Udyami: A Movement to Empower Women Beyond Boundaries

When we think of transformation, we often imagine large policies or global conferences. Yet, sometimes, real change begins with a single word, a single initiative, and a single belief. For me, that word is Mahila Udyami which translates to Women Entrepreneurs. This is not just a phrase, but a vision, a mission, and a movement that is slowly reshaping the landscape of women’s empowerment across the world.

I had the honor of sharing this journey on The Glowgetter Mentor Podcast. In Episode 129, I introduced listeners to what Mahila Udyami stands for. As Chief Philanthropy Officer, I spoke from the heart about why this initiative matters so much. The truth is simple yet powerful: in India, 60% of women live in rural areas. These women are raising families, working within their homes and fields, and supporting communities but often without the opportunities, tools, or recognition they deserve.

What if we could change that? What if we could provide them with skill sets that open new doors? Imagine teaching women to sew, to master IT skills, to grow and market crops, or even to create small enterprises that sell eco-friendly products. Imagine helping them learn how to package their goods, send them across borders, and reach global markets. That is the spirit of Mahila Udyami equipping women with knowledge, skills, and confidence to rise.

But this is not only about training; it is about building ecosystems. As I shared in the podcast, Mahila Udyami is creating vibrant hubs safe spaces where rural women can learn, collaborate, and lead. These hubs are not just classrooms; they are centers of hope. Here, women learn entrepreneurship, digital literacy, foreign languages, and financial management. They learn how to price their products, how to reinvest profits, and most importantly, how to believe in themselves.

Episode 130 brought a deeper layer to this story, when I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Virginia Rivera. Her wisdom and passion add an extraordinary strength to this mission. She reminded us that “when one woman rises, an entire society rises with her.” That statement has stayed with me, because Mahila Udyami is not just about individuals it’s about families, villages, communities, and nations that grow stronger when women thrive.

Dr. Rivera and I also spoke about the global vision of Mahila Udyami. This is not limited to India; it is a blueprint for the world. From Botswana to the United States, we are working to set up international hubs that replicate the same model of empowerment. One of the most exciting initiatives is the Build a Brick Campaign, where anyone can contribute literally buying a brick to help lay the foundation of our first global business hub in India. Each brick carries not only a name, but also a legacy. It represents a promise that this building, and the dreams it holds, will stand forever.

The work of Mahila Udyami extends beyond classrooms and campaigns. It’s about sustainability and creativity. In one of our projects, women learn how to recycle old saris into new products, or how to turn plastic waste into warm blankets. These efforts combine environmental responsibility with economic empowerment, proving that innovation and tradition can coexist beautifully.

At its heart, Mahila Udyami is about dignity. It is about ensuring that women, especially those in rural areas, no longer see themselves as limited to household roles, but as leaders, creators, and changemakers. It is about giving them the tools, training, and platforms to amplify their voices and showcase their talents.

This journey is deeply personal to me. Over the years, I have worked with charities and organizations dedicated to empowering women, but Mahila Udyami feels different. It is bold, dynamic, and deeply…
