UK Government Steps In After Steel Company Folds

In Business
August 27, 2025

The UK steel industry’s having another tough time. Speciality Steel UK (SSUK), the country’s third-biggest steel maker, just went bust. The government’s jumping in to try and save jobs and keep things running.

Steel Company Goes Under

SSUK, which has factories in Rotherham and Stocksbridge, South Yorkshire, was said to be broke by a judge. They were in a bind, with only about £650,000 when they needed around £3.7 million each month just to pay the people working. They just couldn’t afford it. Since a lot of jobs were on the line, around 1,450 of them, the government had to do something. The Official Receiver and a company called Teneo are taking over for now. They’ll cover wages and costs while the government looks for someone to buy the company.

Why the Government Got Involved

The Department for Business and Trade said they really had to do this. If they hadn’t stepped up, everything would have shut down right away, and that would be awful for the local area and other UK factories. Someone from the Department said it’s about keeping things steady, protecting jobs, and making sure the steel industry hangs in there. The government also rescued the British Steel Scunthorpe plant earlier this year. It just shows how shaky the UK steel industry is these days.

Liberty Steel Against Decision

Liberty Steel, which owns SSUK, thinks shutting the company down was a bad call. Jeffrey Kabel, a manager there, said they already had a plan to avoid this happening. He thinks they should’ve looked at other ways to save the company instead. The company also thinks this move is not a good use of taxpayers’ money and will be bad for the steel industry in general.

The Big Story: Problems for UK Steel

Experts are saying this shows there are bigger issues. High energy costs are cutting into profits, other countries are selling steel for less, and companies haven’t been putting enough money into their factories. Steel is super important for Britain’s future for buildings, roads, defense, and green energy. Some people think that if the right plans are set up, it could happen at other factories, too. Unions, politicians, and business leaders are asking the government to come up with a real plan to deal with rising costs, new ideas, and keep steel production going for the long haul.

What Happens Next?

For now, the government’s just trying to keep things going as usual. They’re running things and making sure people get paid while they look for a buyer. But everyone’s nervous. Workers want to know what’s going on. The towns around the plants want things to get back to being normal. Everyone wants to make sure their local steel mills are safe.
