ARE YOU WAITING IN LINE FOR THE NEXT PROMOTION?

Today, while I was in a discussion panel at a human resources conference in Mumbai, one of the superior managers asked me a question. The question was: ‘Payal, from two years, I have my leg online for my next promotion, but it seems that there is no movement. What can I do to advance the line? “

My answer to him was simple: “Why are you online? You can’t stand out while you get online.”

Being in the row for the promotion simply means that it is just a probable hood to make the next movement. It is not a safe shot. It may or may not happen.

The wait may seem forever when waiting in the row a promotion or a salary increase. If you do not get that promotion, you must wait for another one -year review cycle. If you get that promotion, then it is now part of another line to move forward, which will take your own time.

When you are part of a queue of people, you tend to mix and not attract attention to yourself. The whole world is expected to be the same behavior while waiting for their turn. Therefore, it is impossible to “highlight” when everyone is supposed to be doing the same.

In fact, I have trained many executives who come to me with more than 20 years of work experience but are caught in the growth of their career. Each promotion cycle has taken so long that in 20 years, they have only reached the average level.

When training executives, I emphasize this: you must activate the progress taking charge of your career and demonstrating your abilities instead of waiting in the row.

This is how it can take charge and accelerate the growth of your career.

  1. Differentiate: To highlight cash for a promotion, demonstrate exceptional performance, develop valuable skills, build solid relationships and communicate their value to their superiors. Grant in surplus expectations, showing initiative and actively looking for growth opportunities.
  2. Be a problem solving, not just a problem seeker: One of the best ways to highlight, regardless of its current role, is to demonstrate a solid judgment. Doing it will distinguish it as a critical asset for your team. When you raise a problem with your boss, propose a solution. So always walk towards your boss not only with problems, but with solutions.
  3. DDo not trust work performance only: Most people assume that promotions are about experience and performance. But if that were the case, the most workers would always rise first. Leaders not only promote the most capable or qualified person. They promote the person who shows that he is ready for the next level.
  4. Build connections: Research shows that although technical skills hire you, relationship construction skills make you promise. Employees who ask better questions, challenge the assumptions and seek proactively knowledge as higher potential leaders than those who simply execute tasks well.
  5. Start playing the next role: Leaders not only look for someone who can handle their current role. They are looking for some who may think like a leader and take response sibs before they have the title. High performance that follows the instructions and meets expectations can be excellent in your work, but still go through a promotion. Meanwhile, someone who thinks beyond their current responsibilities will rise the stairs faster.
  6. Be very visible: Star team members are overlooked by opportunities mainly because the lack of visibility. It must be visible at all levels of your organization.
  7. Show your value: Regardless of its title, it is still important to show how your work may impact the final result. There are ways to quantify many of their contributions. Once you understand how to create more value, do it. Put the additional work and make sure you are so responsible for it for those who can help you get an increase
  8. Use your time 1: 1 wisely with your manager. Many of us forget that his time with his boss is not just for discussion work and projects. It is a time to speak productive of you, your growth, your dreams and your goals. Do not expect a perfect and auspicious moment to discuss you.

As Gandhi said rightly, it is easy to stop in the crowd, but value is needed to be alone. “The conclusion is that your promotion or increase comes from your effort. Gértes the reward.
