Fresh analysis shows that a growing number of people in the United States has been asking about houses for sale in the United Kingdom since the beginning of the year.
The data, provided by Rightmove, show that there has been a 19% increase in the United States consultations to the United Kingdom compared to last year and the highest number since 2017.
Most-47%-or consultations are looking for smaller houses of 0-2 bedrooms, suggestion investment or a second activity in the home, instead of permanent relocation. However, 32% are looking for more typical family houses of the mass market or 3-4 rooms.
The trend arises as uncertainty grows around the economic policies of President Trump, about what he can do in the long term around international commercial tariffs.
For these possible American buyers, Scotland has replaced London as the most popular region to ask. In the last 10 years, London has generally seen the greatest proportion of American consultations, however, at the beginning of this year he has changed to Scotland, potentially due to its lowest price.
About 28% of American consultations are about homes for sale in Scotland, compared to 26% for London.
Edinburgh has become the most popular destination to ask, replacing Westminster, which is now second. Glasgow has also increased to fourth place, surpassing Kensington and Chelsea.
Colleen Babcock of Rightmove said: “President Trump’s tariff announcements have led to greater economic uncertainty worldwide, and we are beginning to see some of the effects of this on the real estate market of the United Kingdom. Whether it is because the United Kingdom looks as a more stable investment opportunity, or if some buyers are considering a permanent movement throughout the Atlantic, we are seeing an increase in the investigations of The USA.
