Every year in Bett, we are bombarded with Edtech suppliers that show the latest tools promoted by AI, each promising to transform teaching and learning. But how of these launches are loaded with technical jargon and fashion words that leave you wondering what is really under the hood? If he ever nodded while listening to terms such as ‘Automatic Learning’ or ‘Large Language Models’, but I was not completely sure of what they mean in a class context, it is not alone.
That is why I have gathered the Almanac of AI for educators, A practical reference designed to help you go through jargon, understand what these terms mean and ask the right questions to determine if a tool is really useful or simply mount the wave of AI pumps.
Why it is important to understand the terminology of AI
AI is increasingly integrated into education, but suppliers for the use of vague or famous terminology to market their products. For example, a company could say that its platform is ‘A I AI’, but does that use genuine automatic learning, or is it simply an automated glorified workflow? Without a solid understanding of the concepts of AI, it is easy to fall in love with striking marketing instead of making decisions based on evidence on what will support learning.
Understanding the terminology of AI is about being able to participate critically with suppliers, ensuring that any Edtech adopts is based on a real pedagogical value.
Ask the right questions to deepen
Most Bett suppliers have good intentions, but that does not mean that their tools always fulfill their promises. That is why it is important to challenge the statements and deepen more than the sales argument. Here are two key strategies to help you do that:
1. Request tests: “What schools are successful using this and can I contact them?”
A credible supplier should be able to provide real -world case studies and put it in contact with schools that already use their technology. INSEAD OR ACCEPTING SPACE CLAIMS AS “THOUSANDS OF EDUCATORS LOVE OUR PLATFORM,” ask:
- “Can you share a school that has implemented this successful? I would love to know directly about them about their impact.”
- “Do you have any independent research or data that show measurable improvements in learning results?”
If a company struggles to provide details, you can suggest that your claims have more to do with marketing than the measurable impact.
2. I unpack the fashion words: “How does this work in a classroom?”
Many suppliers will describe their products as ‘A IA’ or ‘adaptive’, but what does that really mean? Empégala them to clarify:
- “When you say ‘ai,’, what specific technologies do your tool use?”
- “How does your system customize your system? Is it only incoming content or adapts based on the student’s response?”
- “How much supervision of the teacher is required to make this tool effective?”
When asking thesis questions, you will quickly separate from tools that really improve the learning of those who sound impressive in a launch.
