The March Primary Care Network Update and a Round-Up Of The Latest NHS Guidance

As we go to the spring of 2025, the general practice faces a landscape of significant change. Our last infographic highlights several important developments that will shape primary care in the coming months.

As of March 24, the main updates that affect primary care networks are presented below.

These changes have been widely informed, so it must be sure that it is aware of all significant updates.

The most dramatic holder is the March 13 announcement of Prime Minister Keir Starmer that NHS England will be abolished. The organization has been described as “overloaded and unfocused”, with the declared objective of cutting the bureaucracy and returning NHS to democratic control.

This restructuring comes with substantial implications of the workforce, since integrated care boards (ICB) have received instructions to reduce their costs by 50%.

The new GP contract announced on February 28 brings an investment increase of £ 889 million, which represents an increase in cash of 7.2% (4.8% real growth). This increases the total value of the contract of £ 12.3bn to £ 13.2 billion, the most significant increase in approximately ten years.

GPC England completely agreed the contract, which includes the government’s commitment to develop a new substantive contract within this Parliament.

Unfortunately, GP practices have not exempt the leg from the increase in employer’s national insurance contributions (from 13.8% to 15%). The parliamentarians voted against the amendment of the lords who would have frozen NIC by the practices of GP.

This will exert additional financial pressure on the practices that already administer adjusted budgets and the increase in costs. Unlike NHS trusts and certain other employers, GP practices must absorb these higher expenses without special exemptions. The new GP contract can compensate for part of this increase, so there is still hope.
