How are the London Nationals leading their Junior B first-round playoff series against Listowel so far? Goaltending is a major factor.

Finnish netminder Casimir Weckstrom stopped 54 shots on his 20th birthday before Anthony Tudino’s double-overtime winner stumped the Cyclones 3-2 Wednesday at Western Fair. Weckstrom has made a staggering 103 saves in two games and the Nationals lead the best-of-seven Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League series 2-0.

“He’s been good for us all year,” London head coach Brandon Prust said. “We knew we had something special with him pretty early on in the season when he came over. We have two great goalies (including Knights prospect Finn Wilson) and if we play good hockey in front of them, we know they can hold the fort for us.”

The defending champion Cyclones will try to turn the tide Friday in Listowel.

“The most dangerous teams are desperate ones,” Prust said. “We can get a stranglehold or let them back in.”

LIGHTNING WIN: The London Lightning won their fourth straight game with a 117-113 victory over the Kokomo BobKats Wednesday at Canada Life Place.

The Bolts, currently fifth in the Basketball Super League standings, got 26 points and 11 rebounds from Billy White while Calvin Godfrey scored 20 with 13 boards. James Towns II and Marcus Ottey chipped in 22 and 20 points respectively.

London will face the Jamestown Jackals in its regular-season home finale Tuesday.
